Take a look at all of our services below:

What is Masonry Repair?

Masonry repair involves making small fixes to masonry that don’t usually affect the building’s overall appearance. Examples of masonry repair include repairing small cracks, crumbling mortar, etc. Masonry repair is always happening because masonry gets damaged. If you have masonry on your property, you will always need these minor repairs. Repairing your masonry whenever these issues arise makes it less likely to need restoration.

What Is Masonry Restoration?

Masonry restoration involves repairs large enough to affect the building’s overall appearance. That’s usually the goal of masonry restoration, to make the building look like it did before. Masonry restoration is more extensive in scope than masonry repair and less common. If you regularly repair your masonry, you might never need brick restoration. A building that needs restoration has been neglected.

Chimney Building & Chimney Repair

Besides being cleaned and inspected each year, your chimney will need occasional brickwork repairs to ensure that it is performing its functions properly. Chimney repair is not ordinary masonry work. Specific building fire codes and design requirements for chimneys require that an experienced chimney mason should be called to do the job.

We offer the following types of chimney repair in Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads:

Contact Southside Masonry today for a free estimate on new chimney construction or chimney repair.

Firebox Repointing and Rebuilding

The firebox is the brick area at the base of the fireplace where you build your fire. When the bricks in a fireplace firebox are cracked or have deteriorating mortar joints, the firebox will need to be rebuilt with new bricks and mortar. This will restore the integrity of the firebox.

A chimney cap can also be added to a firebox to prevent future damage from water. The experts at Southside Masonry can repair and rebuild your fireplace firebox and make it structurally sound for years to come.

Mortar Crown Repair

A mortar crown is a concrete surface at the top of your chimney that keeps water out of your flue. As one of the most crucial parts of your chimney, a cracked or broken mortar crown should be repaired immediately to avoid serious water damage.

Water seepage through the mortar crown will cause the chimney to break and crumble. Mortar crowns are usually installed with chimney caps to keep both water and animals out of your chimney. Southside Masonry can install a mortar crown for you or repair your damaged mortar crown.

Damper Repair

A damper closes the flue when you aren’t using the fireplace so that heat doesn’t escape. If you have trouble keeping your home heated in the winter, or if smoke is pouring into your home when your fireplace is lit, this may be a sign that you need damper repair.

If you feel you are in need of damper repair, call a professional from AMC911 to come and inspect the damper and find the solution for your repair needs.

Flue Repair

The flue is the part of the chimney that funnels exhaust to the outside. If it cracks, breaks, or is blocked by debris or creosote build-up, it is a safety hazard that needs to be repaired. Over time, the chimney flue may become damaged because of mortar that has weakened, cracks due to a chimney fire or lightning strike, or build-up of creosote and other corrosive materials.

Once the chimney flue is damaged it can cause heat, moisture, and gases to escape and damage the interior of your chimney. These issues can be repaired by the professionals at Southside Masonry.

Custom Fireplaces

Fireplaces are a major focal point for any room. Nothing brings a warm home atmosphere like flames framed with an elegant, custom-laid brick or stone fireplace and mantel. It’s a family gathering place and should be a treasured part of any home.

Southside Masonry treats every fireplace as a work of art. Let our expert fireplace masons come out and design a fireplace that perfectly reflects your style and home’s unique ambiance.

Masonry Case Studies

Stone Bar with Dyed Concrete Top

The customer contracted Southside Masonry to construct a stone and cement top patio bar. The concrete top was covered with a dye staining compound giving it a rustic textured finish. The finished product results in a classy entertainment area for the customer’s guests.

Langley Baptist Church – Hampton VA

Langley Baptist Church in Virginia called Southside Masonry to make repairs to the east side of the masonry sanctuary wall. The engineer of record determined that the steel and wood vertical support along this wall needed some additional support. We removed the brick and supporting block masonry units around the steel and re-laid them after the repair was made. After the brickwork was complete we installed 30 deep driven steel foundation push piers along 3 sides of the sanctuary foundation walls.
